Recently Costa Rica opened up its beaches but with very limited hours. A couple of weeks ago Costa Rica opened up the beaches for all to use from 5am-8am, Monday through Friday. This was not the best of news for many local surfers who have been dying to get back in the water, however many were happy to just get at least some opportunity to get some surfing in. Well now, local surfers don’t have to worry about having that small window to catch a wave and enjoy the chance to surf whenever they wish, thanks to a small loophole.
Playa Hermosa, just outside Jaco, is one of three beaches belonging to the Ostional National Wildlife Refuge. Those beaches fall under a different category and along with National Parks opened on June 1st. Under this provision, the beach is open to athletes and surfers. The Board of Directors of the Federation in conversations with yesterday’s minister Carlos Manuel Rodríguez of the Ministry of Environment and Energy, made the official announcement earlier this week.
For local experienced surfers, Playa Hermosa is actually the preferred choice as the waves are some of the best and most consistent in Costa Rica. The government has said they are aiming to pull back the rest of the beach restrictions in mid-July in which they still have reported keeping beaches closed on the weekend but open up fully Monday through Friday.
