New Covid Relief Fund Aims to Help Jaco Families

One of the unique qualities of Jaco is the diverse population that lives here. Not only does Jaco tend to attract a diverse mix of Costa Ricans from all over the country, but it also attracts people from all over the world. Paula Simons is one of many foreigners to make the move to Jaco and make it home.

Paula has called Jaco home for 7 years.

Seven years ago she was traveling through Central America (started in Mexico), on a backpacking trip.  She made her way down to Costa Rica and instantly loved it. “I passed through Jacó a few times and always felt a really welcoming warm vibe from the town and community. The waves were consistent and easy for learning, and I really liked the people i met and made good friends fast. I especially like how the expats, locals and tourists all mix very well in this town, compared to some other places in Central America where I’ve noticed more segregation.” said Paula.  “As well as how it’s easy to get around, even if you don’t have a vehicle, and there is a lot to do – everything from surfing, hiking, yoga, live music, good restaurants and community events. What has kept me here through the years though is definitely the supportive community. So in a time like this, when we’re all struggling, I feel it’s a time to come together, and really support each other.”

The economic impacts from Covid-19 continue to take its toll on many and seeing the struggles of local families and businesses has lead her to try and help. Paula recently started a relief fund and partnered with Jaco Impact to help for those in need. The funds raised from the fund will go to food baskets for families throughout the Jaco area. Jaco Impact is helping to put these baskets together along with delivery.

Paula wanted to spread the word because she believes in the good in humanity and despite all this illusion of separation, that we are in this world storm together as one, in Unity. Paula is just one of many in Jaco who have donated and worked to support others in these challenging times. With a second rave of restrictions being enforced in Costa Rica and borders still closed, the tourism sector has devastated businesses and jobs.

Any sort of donation, even $5 can make an impact and help. If you have any sort of connection with the Jaco community this is a great opportunity to give back and help. Donate here
